Am.6,1a 4-7 Ps.145 1 Tm.6,11-16 Lk.16,1-31

26th Sunday OT year ’C’

"There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feasts magnificently every day.

And at his gate there used to lie a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to fill himself with what fell from the rich man’s table; Even dogs came and licked his sores. Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angles into Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried."

Jesus is referring to a well known story of his time. He announces how the rich doesn’t take care about men, but that God ’comes to Lazarus’ aid’.

Jesus carries the whole of humanity in his Heart. He asks us for the grace to let ourselves be touched like him, to recognise and consider the poo ’Lazarus’ of the world.

We live the anguish of all those for whom life has no meaning any more. We are concerned for eh youth living in the streets. May go and help them in their dramatic situation, where they are prey to so many harmful influences.

The Word of God is for now, we are always with Mary, still seeking Jesus. With her in prayer, we put our hope all together in Jesus her Son who saves us.

We wish to open up to the Life He brings to us. He reminds us with force his message of solidarity. He invites us to his table for a foretaste of the banquet that is beyond this life.

"In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his embrace. So he cried out, ’Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’

Abraham said ’My son, remember that during your life you had your fill of good things, just as Lazarus his fill of bad. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. But that is not all : between us and you a great gulf has

been fixed, to prevent those who want to cross from our side to yours or from your side to ours."

Jesus enlightens the life of believers. Death totalises all the fidelities of an existence. It fixes definitively all the choices of man. So it is during our life that we need to be converted and make choices.

Death is an absolute limit.Whether we lived during our lifetime dressed in linen or in purple, covered with ulcers, a time comes when things take on their true meaning.

In this parable the rich man is blinded, he didn’t see the need he had of God, he didn’t see Lazarus who died in state of general forgetfulness.

The rich man dies and the whole town is there to carry him into the earth. But everything changes. The place of beyond is there where God receives us.He who is infinitely good.

With Mary as we follow Jesus we are concerned by ’the poor Lazarus’ of our streets.

The gap between the poor and the rich, between the poor countries and the rich countries is a bomb ready to expose. It could cause an infernal war.

“The rich man said : ’Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father’s house, since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too.”

Abraham said ’They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them.’

The rich man replied’ Ah no Father Abraham, but if someone comes tot hem rom the dead, they will repent.’

Then Abraham said to him ’If they will not listen either to Moses or the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead."

God appreciates each person according to the qualities of his heart. The time is given to us for us to take care of the life of the poor person within us and in others.

The life beyond has already begun, the time given to us builds it.

Jesus gives us the means not to be in an illusion in the experiences we have to live through.

Nobody can answer in our place, for the Word of God can turn over our heart and make of it into a heart of flesh. What changes our life and can make us go back to God is the decision to welcome Jesus’ Word.

Still today, the Word opens up for us the road of conversion, God’s Gospel can still give meaning to our lives.

The sharing of humanity’s goods, whatever order it be, is to be taken into account.

And so Jesus will do his work of Love in the midst of his people.

We ask Jesus, who, although rich, made himself poor, for the grace that our life be offered for the salvation of the world.
