26th Sunday of ordinary Time, year ’B’ 26e dimanche du TO, année ’B’

If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, then in truth I tell you, he most certainly will not lose his reward

Nb.11,2529 Ps.18 Jc. 5,1-6 Mk.9,38-43.45.47-48

26th Sunday of Ordinary Time, year ’B’ “John, one of the Twelve, said to him,”Master, we saw someone who is not one of us driving out devils in your name, and because he was not one of us we tried to stop him’. But Jesus said, ’You must not stop him; no one who works a miracle in my name could soon afterwards speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us. I came to bring a fire upon the whole universe and how I wish it were lit.“The fire Jesus brings to earth is that of Love, the extension of God’s New Love. ’My weight equals the love I have’, said Saint Augustin. My value is the love that is in my heart. Jesus brings each person to the essential question which concerns him personally, a question each one of us can ask ourselves. In myself are there any obstacles that prevent me from going towards Jesus and Eternal Life? It is ’in the name of Jesus’ that we are established, receiving this belonging to Jesus in faith, and this can greatly help us to live our existence following Jesus. Attentive to this message, the Church opens wide its doors to welcome the other person who is also moved by God’s . In order to clearly manifest this love to us, Jesus became a small child for a little child understands the reality of love : ’Let the little children come to me, ’he said, If you don’t become like them you shall not enter into the Kingdom of God.’ So we need to become like tiny little children, at the school of Jesus.”And if anyone gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, then in truth I tell you, he will most certainly not lose his reward."

The Lord Jesus pursues in describing what makes up his Body, with ’whoever gives a glass of water’ in his Name, to one of these little ones who are his brothers, in the name of belonging to Him, will not remain rewardless! And so he indicates how a new human group can be formed out of modest acts done, linked to Himself. This is how to become part of a group according to the Gospel, how to enter into it in the simple manner that Jesus envisages. Out of these tenuous relationships, a new body is made up by Jesus. From now on, the way of ’being put together’ becomes the core of discernment in its relationships towards the little ones, in relationship to oneself and to the poor. The Word of God places us before the Greatness, the Height, the Depth of

God’s Love. It is in the intimacy of our heart that it blossoms. It is the Mission of Christians to live from this Love : we mustn’t fall asleep! Jesus made himself little in his poverty, and when he was going through his agony in his weakness, so as to manifest His Love for us. A tiny little one has the desire to be loved and to love, he understands the language of love. God has him sway from a love that is natural to a supernatural love.

“Anyone who is the downfall of any one of these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown into the sea with a great mill-stone hung around his neck. And if your hand should be your downfall, cut it off, it is better for you to enter into life crippled than to have to hands and to go to hell, into the fire that can never be put out.

The way we are will bear an influence upon other people’s lives, for we are linked to one another more deeply than we are aware of. In this new communion inaugurated by Jesus, there is room for a great respect for the other, whoever he may be. We must give up power and judgement! Asking Jesus to make us poor as he is poor. The whole of our being and life has to ’pass through’ the new love that God gives to us. Our treasure lies in the faith in this love from Jesus, that is always deepening. We honour the discreet servants who help those who belong to Christ. God’s people, we are a royal people, a holy nation, a prophetic people moved by the Holy Spirit, to announce God’s Love to the little ones! When we love in truth, we become little, poor, and vulnerable.

We ask for the grace to understand just how much everything in our life is relative to God’s Love which is the Greatest.
