Christ King of the Universe, year ’B’ Christ Roi de l’Univers, année’ B’

“And so Pilate went back into the Praetorian and called Jesus to him and asked him : ’Are you king of the Jews?’”

Dn.7,13-14 Ps.92 Ap.1,5-8 Jn.18,33b-37

Christ, King of the Universe, year B “Jesus replied ’ Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it about me?’ Jesus replied ’Mine is not a kingdom of this world ; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrended to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.”

With a dignity that is absolutely royal, Jesus doesn’t reply to the question Pilate asks him, rather, he questions Pilate: ’Are you saying this of yourself?’ Jesus’ Love is stronger than hatred and it will always triumph over his enemies. Throughout his public life, more than once, the crowds had wanted to proclaim Jesus’ Royalty, but each time, Jesus ran away from this fleeting human royalty.

He comes to reign in our hearts. Jesus-King wants His Love to be victorious, for it to be the source of all joys. It is a marvelous programme that Jesus has :-

’A King without an army’. God is a disarmed King, a disarmed God. He will be crucified, and here He will reign on a royal throne after having put to death hatred and death. Jesus makes every kind of violence be put to death. He destroys the hell within us. He want us to belong to this Kingdom of Peace and Love.

’A King without any treasures!’ All gold mines belong to Him. All precious stones and all oceans are His. He gives them to us, for He has no need of them. He is the Creator of the world.

“Pilate answered : ’Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me : what have you done?’”

Jesus is King, come into the world to bear witness to the Truth. This is the true meaning of Jesus’ Kingdom which he affirms before Pilate who has the power to condemn him to death. We know very well what is true, and we need the courage to go right to the end in order to let Truth triumph. Jesus saves us, we are his true treasure. His Love is victorious in our lives, he is the ’King who destroys violence. With Him, we can be artisans of peace and of love. But he is the ’King of the kingdom of sinners’! ’Pray for us, poor sinners’ - we repeat these words often. We want to remain constantly in the gaze of compassion

he has for us, and in doing this we can then consider our sisters and brothers with compassion. Just like us, they are poor sinners .

He is therefore the King of the poor! We know that the gracious Love of God is our wealth and this will never be lacking for us. In Jesus’ gaze, it is the Peace of Love that is propagated. This is how the Gospel presents Jesus, King of the Universe who is accused before Pilate the judge.

" Jesus declared: ’My kingdom is not of this world.’ Pilate said, ’ So, then, you are a king?’ Jesus answered ’It is you who say that I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth ; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.’

We are in the world, but we are not of the world. We are in this world to make the Kingdom of Love, tenderness, goodness and beauty come. Jesus is the Saviour of the world, he didn’t come to judge humanity, but to save it. He takes the place of those who are guilty, He alone is the Upright One. We know by experience that violence causes Jesus’ action to fail. The one who dominates the world, the prince of this world, is hidden. In His Passion, Jesus unmasks it. Jesus asks Pilate : ’ Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it about me?’ He sees very deeply beyond that which is visible. In each person he sees the tenderly loved child of His Father, for Jesus is the King of Love. Our faith is in this Love that dwells within us, and through all the places we cross, we remain in this Love. We know quite well that Jesus is in other people and we want to come to his help. Jesus explains the meaning of his Royalty and we wish to follow Him and to be courageous enough to affirm ourselves as Christians.

We ask for the grace to be artisans of Peace, happy to belong to this Kingdom of Love.
