“Anyone who has will be given more ; anyone who has not, will be deprived even of what he thinks he has.”

Pr 3,27-34 Ps.14 Lk.8,16-18

Monday of 25th week, even numbered year

“No one lights a lamp to cover it with a bowl or to put it under a bed. No, it is put on a lamp stand so that people may see the light when they come in.”

Jesus draws our attention upon the lit lamp which mustn’t prevent the light to shine around it. The more it shines, the greater the light increases. This lamp represents our own lives. God has lit this lamp which brings to birth a light to shine in our own eyes.

The Word of God tells of our life as a Light lit up like a lamp on our path. This living Light is transmitted to us by Jesus’ Life and teaching. When we let the Word of Christ live within us we give it all the necessary space for it to be rooted in our hearts.

It takes the direction of our life and we become more and more in the image of Jesus who is the Source of all light and who gives light to the world.

Jesus came to light the great Fire of Love. Only the one who follows him conforms his own life to that of Jesus, entering into possession of the knowledge that delivers us from obscurity. Having the Light of Christ within us we ourselves then become lights. And so the Word of God comes about within us in a hidden way then it will spread out into a great Fire of Love for the world!

“For nothing is hidden but it will be made clear, nothing secret but it will be made known and brought to light.”

Truth enlightens and reveals the truth of all things which will one day take on all its meaning. Light and truth will be revealed in such a way that that it will be impossible to hide anything whatsoever : the full revelation of divine justice will be followed by the judgement about everything that was hidden.

To follow Jesus means to believe in him as our Saviour and to give one’s life over to him entirely.

When God lights our lamp, through Jesus, making lights out of us, he wants this light to shine forth and not that it be hidden.

The world, like a thick cloud, hides the brightness of our light, not wanting our light to shine in the least. If we allow our preoccupations to get a hold of us God’s Word will be put under a bushel. Now, our light needs to be taken care of.

The worst nastiness is unable to throw a shadow over our light if we live in the vigilance of God’s grace. A smile, a hand stretched out, a look that brings life turning us into someone really welcoming, looking to see who is at our side, so as to address a pleasant word to him or her, or again to come to his help if there is a need. This is how a small light is lit, with little sticks which will turn into a great blaze.

“So take care how you listen ; anyone who has, will be given more; anyone who has not, will be deprived even of what he thinks he has.”

God provides all our needs without us having to be concerned. We need to seek this Kingdom of Heaven in the Word of God , this is a source of life and of grace.

Jesus underlines how in a well disposed heart we can hear the Truth. God will grant us more graces to the extent that we are faithful to the work we have.

Whoever listens with a spirit that is eager to understand and obey to Truth is going to receive even more again. The gratuity of the gift of God gives us the freedom to dispose of it in light, being of service to Him. God’s grace fructifies what is good and we are called to be good stewards in the service of our neighbour.

Our God of Love requires us to have attitudes of Love in order to remain in the fire of Love. In taking up the parable of the burning lamp, Jesus said he came to light a great fire. He give to us what we need so that this Divine Fire burns in the world.

The mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ offered up at each Eucharist, received at Holy Communion, is given to us so as to fan this fire of Love permanently : it is a Bread of life and Wine of the wedding feast which warms our hearts once again.

We ask for the grace not to neglect any of these small means which allow the fire of Love to spread out through our heart in community.
