Saint Barthelemy 24th August Feast Days of August

“Philip found Barthelemy and said to him, ’We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote, Jesus, Son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

Tradition has always identified the apostle Nathanael with Barthelemy. He is a man of a great culture, someone who thinks about things whilst examining closely the Word of God! Philip is embarrassed in front of Nathanael saying to him, ’ We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and the prophets wrote, Jesus Son of Joseph, from Nazareth.’ Barthelemy doesn’t let himself be influenced by Philip’s affirmation. Nathanael says to him : ’ Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ ’ He know that this affirmation will be taken up by the high priests. So Philip understands that there is no other solution than to propose to him to have an experience! He says to him ’Come and see.’ This is how he will follow Jesus as far as Jesus’ Ascension, when the Apostles come back from there, he, Nathanael, is in a state of great joy. The Lord Jesus knows what joy he gave to them, and their heart felt this intense joy. For Philip, as for Nathanael, their first joy was to know the Lord, Jesus Christ ; the second joy was to love him and the third, to know eternal and heavenly joy ; To desire the salvation of every single person as for themselves. And finally they were in a state of joy because they knew the Holy Spirit and saw how He worked in them. It was a whole journey that Nathanael pursued after having received a call from Jesus.

"When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said of him, ’There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is no deception.’

We contemplate Jesus’ clairvoyance which is something to be admired. He goes right to the point, taking Barthelemy by surprise : There truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deception!’ Nathanael said to him ’How do you know me?’ Jesus evokes then his connection with the Word of God. ’I saw you beneath the fig tree!’ In scripture the Word of God is represented by the fig tree! Jesus replies

to him, ’Before Philp called you, when you were beneath the fig tree, I saw you.’ Barthelemy is enlightened by the word that goes beyond all his ’knowledge’ which is secondary : ’out of Nazareth!’ to let himself b surprised by the Truth, by God Himself. ’Nathaniel took up ’: Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.’ There are always people of prayer who experience this Divine Love and aspire to it day and night. Nathanael is one of these people. They serve the world through their prayer and writings. This task is for the Church’s pastor. who carry within them such a great grace so that men can see the shining light tin them, and so the whole world can enter into a state of marvel. These people are very often hidden, this is so that God’s servants don’t become proud, but are saved in humility.

“Jesus said to him, ’ You believe just because I said : I saw you under the fig tree?”

So Jesus takes Barthelmy to go even further! ’You shall see even greater things ! ’ The feast of one of Jesus’ Apostles always brings us a unique message that is linked to the grace of that apostle. The apostles went throughout the whole earth speaking to the Lord Jesus’ people and also of the kingdom of Heaven. Their souls longed and aspired to see the Lord, this is why they didn’t fear death, but went joyfully to His encounter. If they desire to live on earth, it was only out of love for men, the apostles loved the Lord this is why they did not fear any tribulation. They loved the Lord Jesus but they also loved men, and this love took away all fear for them. They feared neither tribulations nor death and this is why the Lord Jesus sent them into he world to enlighten mankind. We are here before the fidelity to the Word of God and faced with this new opening up that Jesus brought to us. ’And Jesus said, ’Amen, I tell you, you shall see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.".

Let us ask for the grace to be attentive to the way in which Jesus invites us to move forward.
