Saint Joseph, the Worker May 1st. Saint Joseph Travailleur, 1 mai

“This is the carpenter’s son, surely? Is not his mother the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Jude?”

Col. 3, 14-24 Ps. 89 Mt. 13, 54-58

Saint Joseph the Worker 1st May
“A prophet is despised only in his own country and in his own home.”
Col.3,14..24 Ps.89 Mt.13,54-58
“He came back to where he was from and taught people in the synagogue, in such a way that people were struck by surprise, saying ’Where oes this wisdom come from and these miracles?’
When Jesus comes back to the village at the age of thirty, he surprises people by the announcement of God’s Word! Jesus roots the new love God came to bring through Him, by talking about daily life. But we still need to receive this new love!
Today as yesterday it is hard to talk about God to those who think they know everything about him.
As far as Jesus is concerned, Saint John Chrysostom said ’ The people of Nazareth admire Him but instead of this admiration inspiring faith in them, it inspires jealousy, it is as though they were saying ’Why him and not I?’
Jesus knew who were the ones who, instead of listening to him, became scandalized by his Words. It was his dearest relations, friends, neighbors. But it was precisely these whom he was unable to get to hear his Message of salvation.
The people of Nazareth are questioned by Him, they know his father Joseph the carpenter, Mary’s spouse. This good artisan must have been well appreciated he kept his heart United to God’s Heart and to his brothers at work.
He had his heart at work because he was taken up in the love for Jesus and Mary, this is where He found all his energy.
Through the Heart of Mary his love went as far as the Heart of the Father in the Holy Spirit, the new love of Jesus which animates Joseph. Jesus, the beloved Son of the Father gives a human face to the Infinite Love of God.

“Is this not the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and his brothers: James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t his sisters all from our place? So where does he get all that from?”
are unable to perform miracles and we don’t have Jesus’ Holiness, but we are able to provoke jealousy. Just as it was for Jesus, it can happen that those whom we love and who are dear to us, do not listen to us when we speak about the Gospel. Those who can be very close to us can say they don’t have anything t learn from us.
In each family there lies a secret, Joseph was there before the incomprehensible when the Annunciation was made to Mary! An angel had to say to him : ’Do not be afraid, Joseph, to take Mary your bride, the child she is bearing comes from the Holy Spirit.’
Don’t be afraid, remain in the Heart of God. When Jesus was twelve years old and stayed behind in Jerusalem after the feast, his parents were looking for him! Jesus will say to Joseph and Mary : ’Don’t you know I must be at my Father’s work?’ In these hard moments Joseph’s contemplative life deepened, he the worker. Joseph and Mary’s faith has us enter into a new perspective. Joseph , the ’man adjusted on God’s heart’ plunges his roots into the heart of the Blessed Trinity. This good worker is a bearer of a new Love after Jesus.
“And they were deeply shocked at him. Jesus said to them ’A prophet is only despised in his own country and in his own home.” And he didn’t perform many miracles in that place, because of their lack of faith.”

Speaking to our family about God is hard but when Jesus goes home hi famous words and miracles go before Him.
Saint John Chrysostom adds ’I beg you to look at how pleasant the Master is: he does not punish them because they are not listening to him but on the contrary he says with gentleness tot hem : ’A prophet is despised only in his country and in his own home.’
It is quite obvious that Jesus went away all sad but he rpays his father that his message of Salvation reaches those from his village.
We too should pray that Jesus message reaches those who are dear to us.
When our heart encounters Jesus it is transformed by His Love!
In our life, everything can contribute to the blossoming of this Love.
Jesus seems to be the son of the carpenter Joseph. His mother’s name is Mary, a little servant always very discreet.
Jesus had become a reason of fall for the village of Nazareth. Love must be above all things in our life, peace must reign in our hearts and so then happy are we and thus we make our sisters ad brothers happy by our life and our work.
We ask Saint Joseph for the grace to obtain for us the love that drowses and burns in his heart.

Saint Joseph, the Worker
Jesus came into his country and began to teach in their synagogue; open-mothed, people wondered ’Where does this wisdom come from and all these miracles?’

At the age of thirty, Jesus surprises people by his announce of God’s Word! It is in daily life that that Jesus puts down the roots of the new Love that God came to bring us. Today, like yesterday, it is hard to speak about God to those who have always known us. In Jesus’ case, Saint John of Chrysostome has these words : ’The people of Nazareth admire him, but instead of being inspired in their faith by this admiration, they are inspired to jealousy. It is as if they are saying ’Why him and not me?’ Jesus knows quite well who those who, instead of listening to him, are scandalised by his words. They were his dear relations, friends, neighbours, , but it is precisely these people whom he fails to convince so that they hear his Word of Salvation. The people of Nazareth are questioned by him, they know his father, Joseph the carpenter, the husband of Mary. This good worker, Joseph, must have been very well appreciated, for he kept his heart united to God’s heart and to his brothers whilst at work. He put his heart in his work because he was taken up by the love he had for Jesus and for Mary. This is where all his energy came from. Through the heart of Mary, his heart went straight to the Father’s Heart. The Holy Spirit, this New Love of Jesus, animated Joseph. The beloved Son of the Father gives a human face to the Infinite Love of God.

“This is the carpenter’s son, surely? Is not his mother the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Jude? His sisters, too , are they not all here with us? So where did the man get it all?”

We cannot perform miracles and we do not have Jesus’ Holiness, so we do not cause people to be jealous of us. But like Jesus, it can happen that those who are

dear to us and whom we love, do not listen to us. We recall that those who are the closest to us can see more clearly our failings and might say to themselves’ he has nothing to teach us’. A secret dwells in this family. Joseph found himself to be confronted with misunderstanding at the annunciation : ’Do not be afraid, Joseph, to take Mary your wife. The child she is carrying comes from the Holy Spirit.’ Do not fear, remain in God’s Heart. When Jesus is twelve years old, he stays in Jerusalem after the feast, and his parents go seeking him! Jesus will then say to Joseph and to Mary, ’Didn’t you know I had to be at my Father’s work? At this difficult time, The contemplative life of Joseph, the worker, gains depth. Joseph and Mary’s faith have us enter into a whole new perspective. Joseph, the man “adjusted to the Heart of God” puts down his roots in the Heart of the Blessed Trinity. This good worker, Joseph, bears a new love, in the wake of Jesus.

“And they would not accept him. But Jesus said to them, ’A prophet is despised only in his own country and in his own house,’ and he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.”

It is not easy to speak about God to members of our own family , but when Jesus goes back home, all the stories about the miracles he had performed and all his words, go before him. Saint John Chrysostome adds : ’I beg you, see how pleasant the Master is : he does not punish them because they do not listen to him, but on the contrary he says gently to them, ’A prophet is despised only in his own country and in his own house.’ It is quite obvious that Jesus went away saddened, but he continued to pray that his message of Salvation would reach the people in his village. We,, too should pray that the message of Jesus reaches those most dear to us. When our heart encounters that of Jesus, it is completely transformed by His Love! In our life, everything can contribute to the blossoming of this Love. Jesus is seen as the son of Joseph, the carpenter. His mother’s name is Mary, a small, very discreet servant. For the village of Nazareth, Jesus was a cause of falling. In our life, Love has to be above everything else. Peace is to reign in our hearts, thus we are happy and we make our sisters and brothers happy by our life and by our work.

Let us ask Saint Joseph the grace to obtain the ever-present love that burned in his heart.
