Saint Luke 18th October

“After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself would be visiting. He said to them, ’The harvest is rich, but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to do his harvesting.”

Jesus is saying to us once more : pray and set off. What I need to ask for is the way Jesus was as he was doing things, whether I am praying or acting, for I am sent towards the other person coming from God. And so a great freedom is developed within me- I don’t seek a result for myself.Rather, I am in the attitude of the one who vouches for the action of another in his very ow action. We celebrate Saint Luke, the Evangelist of gentleness and of God’s goodness. He recounted the mystery of the Annunciation putting the accent on a unique Love. It is he again who recounts the sending off of the seventy-two disciples after the Twelve. And so each one of us is someone who is sent, a bearer of the Good News and an artisan of peace : if your peace is recieved, come in and stay! God does his work and we are not worried if we are not recieved : “Your peace will come back to you.” We merely announce what we have recieved, the Good News that brings comfort, for it is the Word of God. The Gospel is this assured happiness in fraternal Communion. The Lord is never far from those who announce it, He manifests himself in all those who announce the Kingdom. In their daily combat Jesus is present in this struggle for the Kingdom.

“Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.”

From now on, my way of encountering another person is different,he percieves in my word that it comes from Someone and leads to another, then he too is called forth by a word that is freeing and free. This way of doing things that Jesus proposes is the very same way he himself lives : in spiritual relationships, Covenant relationships from which fruitful collaborations can start. It is God’s Kingdom, the action of the Holy Spirit that is amongst us because it is also within oneself and within the other person. The program offered to those the Lord designated in Palestine,is the programme we make our own, as Luke did

so for himself. The Mission given to us is a simple one : ’ To reveal Jesus by the Word that comes from God.’ That mobilises the best of ourselves, our capacities for listening and for expression. The kIngdom of God is close at hand. God’s Infinite Love came as far as ourselves. We announce this Love to those who seek Light. We are assured of the Presence of the Holy Spirit to annonce the Good News. ’The harvest is abundant, the workers are few’ said Jesus. ’Pray.’ The Holy Spirit joins our spirit when we cry to the Father and when we turn towards Jesus -Saviour.

“Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before you. Cure those who are in it who are sick and say ’The KIngdom of God is very near to you.”

it is first of all through prayer that the KIngdom of God is spread :

’ God who has chosen Saint Luke to reveal of your love for the poor, through his word and writings; grant to those who claim in your name to be one heart and one soul, and grant to all the people of the world the grace to see your salvation.’

And so God works through all our actions. God loves the poor, he loves in each one of us this part of poverty, he is really himself with this attitude. Do not let us doubt that we too, by opening up ourselves to this Divine Love , shall also be transformed. This trransformation is for all mankind but it is adressesd first of all to the Christian people. This love that is given and recieved unifies us and turns us towards other people. These others can also enter in, because this love becomes something sensitive, marked and knowledgeable. It is the Mystery of links, of covenants given by the Holy Spirit. We are always in ’Jesus’ Hour.’ The Church lives in the most intimate part of the heart of the one who announced it. Chrsitian communities live in the combat Jesus has for Life. The Lord is there , the Living Word cannot not be taught. It is God’s Incarnation, the coming of the Holy Spirit in the ’human sort’. Through us, God continues to bring the world to a new birth. This is the work of Redemption that is purued. We dwell in Peace, under God’s loving gaze, in the new fraternity which God wanted to bring. ’See how they love one another.’

We ask for the grace to be these witnesses of the Good News where the word warms because it is lived in sdailylife in the Church.
