Saint Monica 27th August Saints of August

“Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. Now when he was near the gate of the town there was a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the towns people was with her.”

Saint Monica is a woman whose supplication evokes that of women hidden in the the Gospel, and she has us think of Mary, Jesus’ Mother. Mary is the woman of compassion who sees the misery of her people, she is a reflection of the all-compassionate Father, who already in the First covenant saw the misery of his People. The prayer of such a woman is always answered by the Lord in trials that are not lacking in peoples ’lives. Georgette Blaquière in her book ’The Grace of Being a Women’ says that a woman who knows how to keep quiet is a gift from God. In fact, this woman cries, she doesn’t ’t say anything! In her suffering she became dumb, she is of a great beauty that leads to silence and it is in this silence that the Lord joins her. Following Jesus, Pope Francis says : ’ The Church, that is holy, calls each one of us, she welcomes us, she is open also to those who are the furthest away from her. She calls us all to let ourselves be enveloped by mercy, by tenderness, and by the Father’s forgiveness, our Father who offers to everyone the possibility to encounter him and to walk towards holiness…’

“When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her and said to her, ’Don’t cry.’ Then he went up and touched the coffin and the bearers stood still, and he said, ’Young man, I tell you : get up.’ And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother.”

A considerable crowd accompanied this woman who had lost her husband, he had been her support, and she had lost her only son who had become the sun of

her life. Darkness had filled her soul, but the Lord Jesus is taken up with pity towards her. In front of this woman’s distress and her love shining forth, he says ’ ’Don’t cry.’ Jesus doesn’t cry as with the death of his friend Lazarus, but he raises up his dead person! The bearers stop, Jesus touches the coffin ’Young man, I say to you, get up!’ This word form the Gospel goes well with the feast day of Saint Monica who offered up her life to the Lord for her son Augustin. Her prayer was also answered. Here we have the recital about Augustin’s : ’ One thing alone had me desire to live a little longer, It was to see you become a Christian before I died.My God granted me this grace in an abundant manner, since I see how resolved you are to serve him, to the extent of despising all worldly happiness.’ Some days later, Monica will close her eyes on this world , her prayers having been answered.

“Everyone was filled with awe and glorified God saying, ’ A great prophet has risen up amongst us; God has visited his people.’ And this view of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside.”

And so power, the beauty of a life of compassion is lived out before the Lord. Cured human fragility manifests the shining forth and power of healing which the Lord brings in his Life. Beyond all trials we need this reflection of love on the human face so as to come closer to God. "The Lord wants us to become part of a Church that knows how to open her arms to welcome everybody, so that it is not the house of small number, but the house of all people where all can be renewed, transformed, sanctified by his Love: the strongest and the weakest, the sinners, those who are indifferent, those who feel lost and discouraged,’ says the Pope again. The qualities of the heart, tenderness and renewed human sensitivity renew in us the mystery of the value of our life. This widow, mother of an only child, is the icon of Our Blessed Lady as this only son of hers who is raised up is the sign of the Resurrection of Our Lord.

Let is ask for the grace of the prayer of intercession at the example of Mary who kept all things in her heart.
