Est.14,12-14 Ps.33 Jn.4,19-34

Saint Teresa Benedict of the Cross 9th August “I see you are a prophet ,Sir,’said the woman. ’Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place we ought to worship.”

The Lord looks at us in a very serious and questioning way asking each one of us : Will you remain faithful to the Crucified One? Think hard. The world is in flames, the combat started between Chrsit and the Antichrsit has begun. Taking Christ’s side could cost you your life.’, Edith Stein tells us. John Paul II made Saint Teresa Benedict of the Cross one of the patron Saints of Europe. She was in quest of truth, and we can see how the Church has done well choosing the Gospel of the Samaritan to celebrate her life:

“Woman, belive me, the hour is coming when it will be neither on the mountain nor in Jerusalem that you shall worship the Father.” Jesus, deeply true, listened to this woman of Samaria and said to her ’As for you, you worship what you do not know;we worship what we know, for salvation comes from the Jews.“But the hour is coming and is already here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth ; for these are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”

In her quest for light, Saint Teresa Benedict of the Cross was quite aware that only a truthful, genuine seeking for Truth could bring her the happiness she hoped for.

"Union to Christ being our happiness, and the progression towards this unity our blessing on earth ; love of the Cross is not in any way in contradiction with the joy of being children of God. A pure and deep joy is given when we are given to bear Christ’s cross. Those to whom are given this possibility and that strength-the builders of God’s Kingdom-are the most genuine children of God’, she says again.

’God is spirit and those who worship must worship in spirit and in truth.’

Teresa Benedict recognises Jesus and grasps this truth within herself. She places it in her heart , Jesus will be the One she is waiting for and the aim of her life. He is the truth who gives back freedom to humanity!

"At this point the disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though none of them asked, ’What do you want from her?’ or ’What are you talking to her about?’ The woman of Samaia put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tell the people, ’Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done ; could this be the Christ?’

A good way of getting people to actively seek, is to question them

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him ’Rabbi, do have something to eat, ’but he said ’I have food to eat that you do not know about.’ So the disciples said to one another, ’Has someone brought him food?’ But Jesus said ’My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.’

Relationship with God has its part of secret.

"To suffer and to find happines in suffering, to remain standing and to walk ahead on the hard, muddy paths on this earth, all the while sharing the throne with Chrsit at the right hand of the Father ;to laugh and cry with the children of the world and to never stop singing the praises of the Lord with the choirs of angels, such is the life of Chrsitian until the morning of Eternity arises, ’says Edith Stein once again.

If the revealed truth is something very intimate, Chrsitian life also has a social dimension to it which is not easy to take on. Saint Teresa Benedict of the Cross is a light for us all!

We ask for the grace to seek God with great ardour and with much great intelligence.
