Saturday of 34rd Week, odd numbered year

“Watch out for yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened by debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life and that day will come upon you unexpectedly, like a trap.”

’You will see the Son of man come on the cloud of glory."

A Son of man appears, holding his ground in this world that is crumbling down. Jesus hold firm because he doesn’t depend on this world. He comes in the Holy Sprit into this world, from the cloud. He leans on his Father, he holds out thanks to Him, and is free as far as the world is concerned. He comes with power and glory. He manifests himself, he manifests what we should hold onto, and what holds him : the living relationship with His God.

Our life evolves as the days, months and years go by, declining with old age, but many other causes can have an impact too! The Good News echoes within us thanks to the Presence of Jesus. So when we are at the heart of difficult situations, the time of waiting becomes a more authentic one. We can make an attempt to perceive our life in its depth, to understand it, so as to take in what is required of us.

We are entering into the spirit of Advent! Jesus was speaking to his disciples about his Coming on the eve of his Passion, this He did so as to sustain us in the temptations that await us. He manifests the Tenderness of his heart to us. We are unable to put out his Love like a fire that didn’t catch, for He has loved us right to the end and His Love will always burn for us. We imitate Mary, who stood at the foot of the Cross in perseverant prayer. We don’t take our faults as a pretext of flight, for Jesus has come to save us. It is in Jesus that we find our support. He is the Divine Doctor who comes to heal us in all our troubles.

“For like a trap it will come down on all those living on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to hold your ground before the Son of man.”

Severe crises are spreading throughout the world at the moment, and we could well be taken up by fright. We come to understand our common history and the meaning of these words:

’The heavenly powers are shaken.’

We can understand how when our bearings collapse, we can become really frightened. When faced with such a situation, we open ourselves up to the Good News in a new manner, seeing our situation in a different light.

Jesus comes to reveal to us what really counts in our lives. Not to let ourselves be impressed by the misery in the world, but we pray like Mary , in solidarity with Jesus.

We ask for the grace to be better people, for we don’t always do what we could do!

Jesus came to give us the victory of his Love:

’I have come to spread a fire on earth and how great is my desire that is becomes enflamed’

Faced with worries in our lives, we are taken up in the temptation of shunning prayer, to go into a world of distractions. We then become aware that this just adds to our own emptiness and that of the world.

“All day long Jesus would be in the Temple teaching, but would spend the night in the open on the hill called the Mount of Olives. And from early morning the people thronged to him in the Temple to listen to Him.”

We are called to remain vigilant in prayer, a sign in us of God’s desire. This prayer maintains us in the truth of our situation of waiting. This cannot fulfill us. The only thing we have is prayer to help us put up with our state of poverty. Thus we stay free over every situation. And so when Jesus will come, we can go to Him because we won’t have stopped waiting for him in this world, without being of the world. When the world does collapse, we won’t be overcome. On the contrary, this will show us what keeps us going, what we hold onto, the waiting of the Coming of the Lord Jesus.

The underground, hidden Love of God works secretly in our hearts. The deepest transformations cannot be seen from the outside; this is the Mystery of the hidden Love in hearts. This mystery is revealed to Saint John and to the whole of the Church. During his agony, Jesus asked his apostles ’to remain’

with Him and ’to pray.’ A man full of strength, he puts everything back in its place. The collapse of the world and the Coming of the Son of man manifests the true truth of our situation : the possibility to be fully ourselves, to hold ourselves upright, already risen.

We ask for the grace to pray at each moment so that God will act mercifully.
