’A servant is not greater than his Master,’ says, Jesus. ’If they persecuted me, they will persecute you too.’

Ac. 16, 1-10 Ps. 99 Jn. 15, 18-21

Saturday of 5th Week of Easter 30th April 2016

“A servant is no greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you, too.”

Ac.16,1-10 Ps.99 Jn.15,18-21

“If the world hates you, you must realise that it hated me before it hated you.If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own ; but because you do not belong to the world, because my choice of you has drawn you out of the world, that is why the world hates you.If the world hates you it is because you are not of this world whereas I have chosen you from the world. If you were of the world the world would love you for it is friends with what resembles it.”

In this one of Jesus’ messages, ’the world’ designates those who are opposed to the initiative taken by the Father : it is the world of the refusal of God. It is not a matter of secret hatred laid down in peoples’ hearts but of a hatred that is active and efficient, going as far as persecution.

What the world cannot bear is that the Sprit Paraclete who teaches him where he comes from and where he is going. We escape the world of refusal of God and his business of autonomy concerning God, we adhere to the filial liberty in obedience to God.

Our Saviour Christ Jesus extirpated hatred that might still be drowsing within us, but this hatred can be awoken by hatred of the world acting in our midst!

We do indeed encounter obstacles to divine life and we have an experience of the ’world’ around us, but also within us. Belonging to Christ, we follow Jesus, happy to give our lives with Mary, who was happy to give her life following Jesus.

“Remember the words I said to you : A servant is not greater than his Master. If they persecuted me they will persecute you too; if they kept my words they will keep yours too.”

Because they do not know Jesus and do not accept God who sends Him, men of refusal persecuted Jesus the One Sent by the Father. The intended trial of Jesus that led him to the Cross, is perpetuated against Jesus’ friends, who were obedient, as was Jesus, unto death.

Likewise, the Servant Church, espouses all of her Lord’s destiny : a destiny of service, a destiny of unconditional obedience.

The elderly Simeon had announced this to Mary : ’A sword will pierce your heart’. When Mary was carrying Jesus in her, she protected Jesus and He protected her. It is by passing through Mary’s Heart that the Heart of Jesus was wounded.

The hatred of the world against us is a sign that we are truly moving ahead in the Heart of Jesus. In fact this hatred of the world does not have God fail nor does it have his design for salvation fail, for the work of hatred, persecution, far from separating the believer from his Saviour, intensifies the relationship with the Father and to the Son.

Even better, persecution has us enter into the filial response of Jesus to his Father and we are always put before God’s Infinite Love as we live in faith in Jesus Christ, enlightened by his Word and nourished by the Sacraments that give us God’s Life and makes us victorious over all evil :

’Remain in my Love as I remain in the Father, remain in me.’

“But it will be on my account that they will do all this to you, because they do not know the one who sent me.”

Mary, who gave her consent for the joyful mysteries at Christmas, also gave her consent for the whole life of Jesus. It is gradually that she discovered the sorrowful mysteries of his life. By giving her consent to the sorrowful mysteries, Mary was already glorified in Him.

’The servant is not greater than the Master.’

Because we are infinitely loved, it is only in Love that we shall be able to confront the trials and hatred that come from the world.

In this Love we can bear all things, for we still need to be purified, pacified and enlightened. It is a whole new inner work in Jesus that is given for us to operate our total liberation.

When we are freed, rivers of living waters, where love of compassion take form, flow out through us.

We are witnesses of the gradual transformation of our life in God, he has us to love in the Holy Spirit.

We ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to remain in Jesus so as to go deeply through the mystery of his Life.

SATURDAY of 4th WEEK of EASTER

’If the world hates you, you must realise that it hated me before it hated you. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you do not belong to the world, because my choice of you has drawn you out of the world, that is why the world hates you.’

In this message from Jesus, ’the world’ designates those who are opposed to the initiative of the Father :it is the world that refuses God. It is not a question of a secret hatred, hidden in the bottom of hearts, but more of an active and efficient hatred, that goes as far as persecution. What the world cannot bear is the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, that teaches us where we come from and where we are going. The Christian escapes the world of refusal and its business of being self dependent world without God. He adheres to the filial freedom in obedience to the Father. Our Lord Christ Jesus extracted the hatred that could still doze within us, but this hatred can be awoken by the hatred of the world acting in our midst! Indeed, we can meet with obstacles to divine life and we can have the experience of ’the world’ around us, but also within us. Belonging to Christ, we follow Jesus, happy to give his life with Mary who was happy to give her life in the footsteps of Jesus.

’Remember the words I said to you; A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you too; if they kept my word they will keep yours as well.’

The men in a state of refusal persecuted Jesus, sent from the Father, because they did not know Jesus and did not accept God. The trial that was intended for Jesus and that led him to the Cross turned into a trial against the friends of Jesus.Like Jesus, they obeyed even to death. Likewise, the Servant Church espouses the whole destiny of her Lord :’a destiny of service, a destiny of unconditional obedience’. The elderly Simeon had announced to Mary : ’A sword

will pierce your soul’. When Mary bore Jesus within her, he protected her and she protected him. It was in passing through Mary’s heart that the Heart of Jesus was wounded. The hatred of the world against us is the sign that we are truly moving forward into Jesus’s Heart. We are ever placed before the Infinite Love of God and we live in faith in Jesus Christ enlightened by His Word and nourished by his Sacraments which give us the life of God and make us victorious over all evil : ’ Remain in my Love as I remain in the Father, dwell in me.’

’But it will be on my account that they will do all this to you, because they do not know the one who sent me.’ In fact, this hatred of the world doesn’t cause God to fail. Nor does it bring about his designs of salvation to fail, for the work of hatred, persecution, far from separating the believer from his Lord, serve to intensify his relationship to the Son and to the Father. Better still, persecution has us enter into the filial response of Jesus to his Father. Mary, who gave her contentment for the Joyful mysteries at Christmas, gave her contentment for the whole of Jesus’ life. It was little by little that she discovered the sorrowful mysteries of her life.In giving her contentment to the sorrowful mysteries, Mary was already glorified in Him. ’The servant is not greater than his master.’ Because we are infinitely loved, it is only in Love that we can face up to trials and the hatred of the world. In this Love we can put up with everything for we still need to be purified, pacified and enlightened. It is a whole work Jesus that brings about in our interior life and this leads to our freedom. When we are liberated, rivers of Living Waters, where Love of Compassion takes shapes in us, flow freely. We are witnesses to the gradual transformation of our life in God.He has us live from the Holy Spirit.

Let us therefore ask for the grace to remain in Jesus in order to live deeply from the Mystery of His Life
