Sunday of 29th Week, year ’B’ Dimanche de la 29e semaine, année ’B’

“James and John, the son of Zebedee, approached him. ’Master’, they said to him, ’We want you to do us a favour.”

Is.53,10-11 Ps.32 He.4,14-16 Mk.10,35-45

SUNDAY of 29th week, of Ordinary Time, year ’B’ “James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him, ’Master’ they said to him,’ We want you to do us a favour.” He said to them, ’What is it you want me to do for you?“They said to Him, ’Allow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.”

James and John follow Jesus, John is the disciple that Jesus loved, James will be the first Apostle martyr ; there is a strong relationship between the two brothers! Apart from the complicity of their mother, they are looking for a place in the Kingdom! They feel in harmony with Jesus gestures and his words, they really want to be very close to Him and they manifest this : ’To be on the left and right of Jesus.“Jesus’ response is of a great realism and it is important for our daily life : ’Can you drink the cup I am about to drink?’ Jesus introduces a parameter that the Apostles hadn’t really imagined : that of the Suffering of his Passion. In their generosity these two apostles reply : ’Yes, we are able.’ Jesus confirms that it will be good like this and Thomas will say at another moment : ’Let us go and die with him!’ But Jesus adds : ’As for sitting at my left and right it is my Father who grants this.’ Jesus situates himself as a humble servant, he doesn’t have the power to say who will be on his right or on his left in his Kingdom. Jesus also takes the comparison of the world for the other Apostles who are indignant ’Look at the world, don’t do as it does.’”Jesus said to them :’You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I shall drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I shall be baptised?’ They replied ’We an.’ Jesus said to them, ’The cup that I shall drink, and with the baptism with which I shall be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant ; they belong tot hose to whom they have been allotted."

Jesus came to his own and his own did not receive him, says the Apostle John. The world doesn’t receive the poor, the suffering ones and the little ones who are prophets of the Kingdom. The Kingdom of Love is totally free : ’Whoever wants to buy love will obtain despise’ says the Song of Solomon. Jesus says : ’Can you drink of the Cup I shall drink of?’ Thus it is a way of entering into the mystery of compassion so as to follow Jesus who is rejected and struck at,

taking on Himself the suffering of humanity. It is not God who created suffering, it is the deceitful one’s jealousy, but God will take it on Himself. If we follow Jesus, we take on us humanity’s cries and allow ourselves to be put out!! Are we going to drink from the Cup of Jesus? The Cup of Jesus will help us to look at the Cup of our brothers : a very bitter one. The prophet Isaiah illustrates this Gospel passage well. Who can believe what we announce? Crushed by suffering, the Servant was pleasing to the Lord.’ Jesus has us enter into his Glory, He announces the Infinite Love of God, he introduces us into the feelings in our Father’s Heart. “The thoughts of God are not the thoughts of men.” Mary, the mother of Jesus, will be touched by Jesus’ suffering in a unique way she will be the first to be baptised in Jesus’ passion. ’You shall drink my Cup. The baptism in which I shall be plunged, you will receive it!’ The compassion of his Heart is His response to the Infinite Love of God.

“When the other ten had heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said to them, ’’ You know that among the gentiles those they call their rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must become your servant, and anyone who wants to become first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of man himself came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mary will be the first one to indicate to us the way of Jesus, to participate in his Cross because she was the first one to enter into a state of weakness! As the Father gives his Son, Mary has also given her Son. For us, everything began in Joy with the gift of Jesus at Christmas Time. here we find Mary in this incredible mystery : who can believe what we are going to announce! The God of Joy, of Peace, of Love is revealed to Mary at the Annunciation. Mary’s Joy is present to us in her Yes to Love, in a way that we are unable to conceive. She is going to become the Mother of the Unique Son of God whom she is going to offer with Him! What Mary is living is in link with what God is living, it is an ineffable mystery, God is God! We are his little creatures and we bear in resemblance to Him the capacity of his Infinite Love. God is in an amazing Joy as He give us life. Mary participates in a new child birth of a new world. But it is necessary to pass through Jesus’ sorrow : ’The woman in child birth is in pain, but when the child has been born she is joyful with the new born child." We ought to make this passage, going as far as the joy of the Father to the

Resurrection of Jesus. ’You are my Son, you are my beloved, in you I have placed all my Love."

We ask for the grace to follow Jesus in the joyful mysteries , in the sorrowful mysteries and right up to his Glory.
