Transfiguration of the Lord year ’A’ 6th August

“Six days afterwards, Jesus took with him Peter, James and John his brother, and he took them apart, on a high mountain. He was transfigured before them; his face became brilliant as the sun, and his clothes white as Light.” ’Today the Lord really has appeared on the mountain. Today human nature, created long ago to be like God, having become darkened by the disfigured faces of idols, has been transfigured into t he former beauty of created mankind.’( Gn.1,26) Today on the mountain, man, who was dressed in a gloomy, dark-skinned tunic, has out on the divine clothes draped in light as in a cloak’ (Ps.103,2) This is what Anastase of Sinai tells us. ’The glory of God is the blossoming of his Love within us, Jesus is happy to be God’s Glory, the Transfiguration is a mystery of divine happiness, it was already expressed when Jesus came down into the bosom of the Virgin Mary, to take on our own human nature. It is thanks to his human nature that Jesus, in his mystery unknown by the devil, will overcome hell. Jesus who was completely overwhelmed will not give in to sadness. He will remain, in an invisible manner, in the Glory of God. On this day the shining forth of God’s infinite Love, dwelling in the inmost parts of his Being, comes to light! Jesus is transfigured before his disciples Peter, James and John, so that they will be able to confront the ordeals which will befall them. "And behold Moses and Elijah appeared to them and made conversation with Jesus. Then Peter began to speak, saying ’Lord, how good it is for us to be here. If you wish I’ll put up three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He was still speaking when a cloud came and covered them with its shadow, and out of the cloud came a voice saying ’This is my Beloved Son, in whom I find my Joy : listen to Him!’ When they heard this, the disciples fell on the floor, face downwards, filled with great fear." Peter is dazzled by this light but shows how hard it is for him to travel in the night of faith!  The beloved Son of the Father welcomes his friends in his intimate life with the father. These are the disciples who will witness the disfigured face of Jesus in agony, they will have a hard time accepting the Transfiguration and the mystery within it! God’s Glory is revealed in the victory of Love over all evil shining forth on the whole of his being. Jesus had revealed this : ’The Son of man is going to suffer, He will be mistreated, crucified as a criminal.’ Jesus who will go through the disfiguration, will be surrounded by these same apostles Peter, James and John. The other apostles will be a bit further off. Peter has a hard time to put up with this spectacle of agony, just as he had with the Transfiguration! Jesus is glorified before him, the beloved Son of the Father shines forth with God’s Glory, with His Infinite Love. Rays of sun about his head, clothes brilliant white. Peter said to Jesus : ’Lord, how good it is for us to be here! If you like, I’ll put up three tents here : one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ At the Transfiguration it is shown how the Crucified Jesus will rise from the dead. Jesus, the Eternal Son of the Father, the child of Immaculate Mary, unites in Himself heaven and earth. "Jesus drew near, touched them, saying ’Get up and don’t be afraid!’ Getting up, they saw no-one, only Jesus, stood there by Himself. Coming down from the mountain, Jesus gave the this order : ’Speak to mon-one about what you saw, before the Son of Man be risen amongst the dead.’ Anastase of the Sinai said ’You told me on Sinai : ’A human being is unable to see me and live.(v.20), how can we contemplate you now, face to face, on earth and in the flesh? How do you dwell amongst mankind? You who are life and who give life, how do you hasten towards death? You who dwell amongst the highest beings in heaven, how do you move down towards the most abandoned people, those who have dies?. For you wish also to appear to those who have been sleeping for centuries, and visit the patriarchs in the realm of the dead, go down to Adam in his pain..’ ..For this is how ’the righteous will shine at the time of the Resurrection.’(Mt.13,43) ; this is how they will be glorified, this is how they will be transfigured. This time of transfiguration is already a revelation of Jesus’ Glorification. It is necessary so as to come to an understanding of Jesus’ disfiguration. Enlightened, we move forward enveloped by the Word of the Father :  ’You are my Child, my Beloved, in you I have placed all my Love.’ In the night of faith, each and every day we can live from this Love in the Holy Spirit. It is the Shining forth of God’s Glory at work within us. With Jesus we are on a path of glorification. This Shining Love, an intense Light of God’s Glory, shines in the deepest part of our life. Our transfiguration is to live from this Love when with Jesus we keep our smile when faced with adversity. God’s Love always comes out the winner.

We ask for the grace to receive the mystery of the Transfiguration of Jesus in the most intimate part of our heart.
