TUESDAY 3rd WEEK of EASTER,12th April 2016

“I am the Bread of Life come down from heaven who gives life.”

Ac.7, 51-8 Ps.30 Jn. 6,30-35

“So they said, ’What sign will you yourself do, the sight of which we will believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as Scripture says : He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”

By the multiplication of the loaves and by dominating the sea, Jesus invites the Jews to come to understand that there is not a new manna but for those who believe, but that it is Jesus is the true Bread of Life. Those who listen to Jesus are simple people, they want concrete proof, they ask for signs but Jesus seeks to awaken spiritual aspirations :

’It is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven’ he said, after the multiplication of the loaves : ’ What sign will you accomplish so that we believe in you? ’ask those who had witnessed the multiplication of loaves. Jesus is the bread from God come down from Heaven and who gives life to the world. In the revelation of his Love, Jesus encounters the forces of resistance that are an obstacle for him. This resistance is a combat sung in the paschal night :’a prodigious duel in which life and death confront each other. The Prince of life dies, alive, he gives life for ever. ’The more we move forward in the knowledge of the mystery of the bread of life, the more we ask for humility. The Passion of Jesus makes us victorious in our combats, it is given to heal us. Jesus, the Bread of Life, is given to us so we can go through trials and dwell in love’s victory.

“Jesus answered them, : ’Truly I tell you it as not Moses that gave you the bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you bread from heaven, the true bread; for the bread of God is the bead which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

I am the bread of life, says Jesus. The multiplication of the loaves is a miracle ’inferior to the manna’ for it was an ordinary bread that Jesus gave them, a bread ’not come down from heaven’. Jesus replies that he manna given by Moses was

only a materiel food next to the ’food truly heavenly’ that the Father wants to give to mankind : ’The true bread from Heaven.’ We should let ourselves contemplate these words and see what they say to us.We are made for God, our true hunger is a hunger for God, our only food is that which comes down from God. It is in gentleness and humility that Jesus positions himself as the bread from God, this true bread, come down from heaven giving life to the world. On the eve of his Passion, Jesus will take the bread and wine, will bless His Father and will manifest how he will transform the sorrowful events of His Passion in the glory of his Resurrection. Thus the Eucharist announces the great combat in which we are engaged. In God, in Jesus’ humanity, the new and eternal covenant is given to the world, it says how much God is Love.

“’Sir,’ they said, ’give us that bread always’ Jesus answered them :’ I am the Bread of Life. No one who comes to me will ever hunger; no one who believes in me will ever thirst.’”

The Word of Jesus is good Bread for the heart.’ When your words came to me, I devoured them. They ravished and delighted my heart, said Jeremiah. ’I have food that you do not know. My will is to do the will of he who sent me,’ says Jesus. The good bread is not just the Words of Jesus, it is Jesus himself, his Person from whom we receive nourishment through faith as we believe in Him.

’I have a food to eat of which you do not know, my food is to do the Will of He who sent me."

Jesus comes from the Father. He dwells in the Father and will not shift in the way He loves us. He is faithful in His Love. Upon him the power of hell will come rushing down as too the mystery of iniquity with great violence. Jesus remains standing, he will die standing on the Cross, then in his death going down to hell to take us out victorious from there.

We adhere to his person when we eat the Bread of Life. When we receive this ’bread’ the hidden presence of God the all powerful Infinite Love of God is given to us so that we become a ’body’ with Jesus. And so we can join him in the combat for truth and love which has us overcome the powers of darkness and

death. Jesus, Gentle and Humble of Heart, gave himself as Bread of Life in the power of his Infinite Love. He comes to the heart of our life to recreate us and to regenerate us in giving us light and strength to follow his path and continue his life of Love.

Let us ask for the grace to enter into the mystery of Jesus, Bread of Life.
