"The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Jr. 18, 18-20 Ps. 30 Mt. 20, 17-28

WEDNESDAY of 2nd WEEK of LENT "The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ Jr. 18, 18-20 Ps. 30 Mt. 20, 17-28 “Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he took the Twelve aside by themselves and said to them, ’Look, we are going to Jerusalem and the Son of Man is about to be handed over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised up again.” Jesus, true God and true man, goes through the experience of going up to Jerusalem, towards his Passion, and he lives it in such a human manner.  He doesn’t go it alone, the twelve disciples are at his side and he tells them about what is going to happen to him. Prudently, he associates his disciples to his own path, telling these men close to Him what the reality is. This going up to Jerusalem which is inspired by the Holy spirit will bring about a fundamental change in the disciples’ mentality. Jesus asks them to make any opinions about Salvation that are far too human disappear. For Jesus is bringing about Salvation in the world, He alone. Our natural inclinations have us dominate, command, and give orders. If Jesus announces that the way to the Kingdom is a narrow one, we can join Him there. He opens up a door by which we can get out of a closing in on ourselves and out of eath, so that we may find Life once again. The way of Jesus is a service, it is Life. Jesus is ’the Servant’ of each one of us. Through the Gift of Himself in the Eucharist He has us come into contact with the reality of ’servant’. The Way of Jesus is our Way to love.      He makes the opinions that are far too human explode and opens up for them new horizons of an understanding of his own Life and that of those who will follow Him. The prophet Jeremiah had already announced the Cup that Jesus was to drink ’Let us make a plot!’ It is the announce of the Passion and this has us understand Jesus from the inside. Jeremy’s adversaries affirm it : “The consultations about the Law aren’t likely to disappear because of a lack of priests! The counsel will not lack a wise man! We shall always have the word, and prophets. You, Lord, pay attention to me, I am fragile and poor. See, they have dug a ditch to forget about me in.” Jesus is taken up with fright. He announces that the way to the Kingdom is a tight one but that we can join him there. He opens up a door through which humanity will be able to come out of after having been being closed in on death. "Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came with her sons to make a request of him and bowed low ; and he said to her ’What is it you want?’ She said to him ’Promise that these two sons of mine may sit at your right hand an the other at your left in the Kingdom.’ Jesus answered, ’You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink? They relied ’We can.’ He said to them, ’Very well; you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’ Jesus goes to what is essential in the question asked to him by the mother of the sons of Zebedee. He has her express her desire and he answers her. Each one of us has to move forward in his path of communion with others people. The mother of the sons of Zebedee wants her sons to acquire a plenitude of Life with Jesus. The service and disinterested gift of themselves comes from their freedom.  Jesus has told his disciples what is going to come about : his Passion. He prepares us to understand it from within ourselves. To follow and witness from his Infinite Love of the Father for humanity will be our Mission. Jesus gives us the necessary Light and strength to follow Him : He answers his disciples : ’So be it, you shall drink my cup.’ ! This is how the Good News is announced to the Church. In this Body of Christ, humanity suffers with his Lord, praying in communion with him : ’The Bride follows the Lamb wherever He goes.’  To give their life like Jesus Himself for ’the Son of Man came, not to serve but to give His Life as a ransom for many.“Now, says Jesus, you will drink my cup!’ Jesus gives us light and strength to follow him and to witness the Infinite Love of the Father for humanity. The Good News is announced in Church, in this Body, a part suffers with Her Lord and the other prays in communion with her and for her : ’’The Bride follows the Lamb wherever He goes. ’Women, men and children take up the way of Jesus and live the reality of the Cross in the world.”When the other ten heard this, they were indignant with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, ’ You know that among the gentiles the rulers lord it over them, and great men make their authority felt. Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become greater among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a s a ransom for many.’ In this way, Jesus gives us the conditions of his call. He enables us to go to Him by creating a space of freedom where each one of us can follow him. Jesus renounces all power over his disciples, he gives them free speech. He opens up a new way of being together from exchanged words. He lets each person feel what their desire is. We beg the Father of mercies to give the Holy Spirit to all those today are undergoing the Passion of Jesus in the world. There are many people following Jesus in the Way of the Cross in the world. It is something we cannot do without the Light and Strength of the Holy Spirit. Jesus nourishes us with His Eucharist, this is how he prepares us for his Passion that comes without any warning! The yes given by James and John , we give it also as we follow Jesus. It is in Him that we give our life in truth and in this way we find our own life, in order to serve Him. Let us ask for the grace to follow Jesus in His Passion of Love for the Father and for ourselves.

WEDNESDAY of 2nd WEEK of LENT

“Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he took the Twelve aside by themselves and said to them, ’Look, we are going to Jerusalem and the Son of Man is about to be handed over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised up again.”

Jesus, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, presents to the disciples what will happen to Him!

They relied ’We can.’ He said to them, ’Very well; you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’

Perhaps the mother of the sons of Zebedee wants her sons to acquire a plenitude through the disinterested gift of themselves to Jesus? To give their life like Jesus Himself for ’the Son of Man came, not to serve but to give His Life as a ransom for many.“Now, says Jesus, you will drink my cup!’ Jesus gives us light and strength to follow him and to witness the Infinite Love of the Father for humanity. No; anyone who wants to become greater among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a s a ransom for many.’

To be a servant and slave exactly as Jesus asks of us is an impossible task for us. It is beyond our poor means : we should implore, hope and intensely desire these gifts be given to us. Jesus will be crucified but on the third day will rise again. He becomes the disciples’ life who will discern the traces of his face in suffering humanity. We find Jesus in our life again which is nourished by the Eucharist, and so Jesus prepares us for the Passion for it comes without warning! The one who was in a state of joy and abundance finds himself so easily in a situation of pain that can come about from one moment to the next! ’Can you drink the Cup I will drink?’ ’Yesy, say James and John. This yes, we say again following the Apostles by discerning the face of Jesus Our Saviour Living amongst us.

Let us ask for the grace to follow Jesus in His Passion of Love for the Father and for ourselves.
