“Now we are going up to Jerusalem and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chief priests and scribes.”

1 P1,18-25 Ps.147 Mk.10,32-45

Wednesday of 8th week, even numbered year Ordinary Time

"The disciples were on the road, going up to Jerusalem; Jesus was walking on ahead of them ; they were in a daze, and those who followed were apprehensive. Once more taking the Twelve aside he began to tell them what was going to happen to him :

’Now we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is to be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the gentiles, who will mock him and spit at him and scourge him and put him to death ; and after three days he will rise again.."

Jesus is presented as the servant, he offers himself as a model to imitate and follow. He will accomplish his Mission of service to God and his brothers through gift of self. Through their request, James and John show that do not understand Jesus witnessing to the Passion. Jesus doesn’t hide his way of sorrow to us! Peter will understand him much later. We shall all have to accomplish this path to conversion!

We give thanks to God for his Word of Truth which each day calls us to be converted.

"Jesus said to them ’You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I shall drink or be baptised with the baptism with which I shall be baptised?

They replied ’We can.’ Jesus said to them ’The cup that I shall drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I shall be baptised you shall be baptised."

Jesus receives the power and glory as a ’servant’, this is the measure he takes upon himself which is the destiny of suffering and of sin of the whole of humanity. Jesus’ service is accomplished in total fidelity and in full responsibility towards mankind. This is why the free acceptance of his death becomes the price of liberation for the multitude and becomes the beginning and foundation of every man and of humanity altogether.

If Jesus does not hide this way He is to follow, nor does he hide that his disciples are going to drink from his Cup. Jesus manifests his Tenderness and Mercy, whoever wants to follow him will follow him in his Passion and will also drink from his Cup.

The tenderly beloved Son of the Father goes down into our human nature, in our flesh so as to deliver us from the leprosy of sin. He will take out each one of us from darkness by taking upon himself the cup of malediction which will then change into a cup of benedictions.

“As for sitting at my right hand or left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted.”

When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said tot hem ’You know that among the gentiles those they call their rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not happen amongst you. No, anyone who wants t become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be a slave to all. For the Son of man himself came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

The ten others are indignant because they have not understood how it is not easy to leave the dynamic of power and glory. Jesus addresses himself to all the disciples, calls them to him, almost hugging them against himself so as to form one unique Body with him, one that cannot be divided.

Domination and service, selfishness and altruism, possession and gift, interest and gratuity are logistics which are deeply opposed and which confront each other at all times and in all places.

Jesus will take all things upon himself, all our misery and he will take with himself to live an Infinite Love, which has never stopped beating in his Heart of God.

Only Jesus’ Truth frees us from our weakness.

The path which leads to the Resurrection is a path that is a tough one! Jesus who is Light, seeing the weakness in mankind, expresses the Truth of an Infinite Love.

We ask for the grace to understand how Jesus saves us, gives us Light, the strength of Love that we need so as to go through the Paschal mystery of our own life.
