Second week of Lent : Friday of 2nd week of Lent

“Listen to another parable. A man owned some land and planted a vineyard. He surrounded it with a cloister and built a tower there; then he went on a journey and left it to some hired workers. When the harvest drew near he sent his laborers to the vineyard to gather its fruits. But they took hold of his servants, beat one of them, killed another, stoned a third one.Once again he sent out other servants who were rated in the same way.”

The parable of the homicidal vinedressers is not just addressed to the high priests and Pharisees, but it is to all of us that Jesus speaks. Jesus’ gestures and words announce the sterility in the believers who are incoherent with the way they worship and with their life of faith. Jesus chased the sellers from the Temple, a house of prayer, because it had been transformed into a bandits’ den ; he encountered a fig tree, symbol of an elected people, without any fruit and which dried up straight away.

This parable talks to us about the mystery of God’s Love that the People of Israel turn away from : “My beloved had a vine, he planted a rare plant there.”

This choice of God is for the people of Israel. God had wished to contemplate in the eyes of his little creature the reflection of his love and all He finds is jealousy, division, dispersion and hatred! Now, jealousy wounds very deeply, it brings about division and it kills! Thus the mystery of Jesus is announced, the seamless tunic is a sign of it. Jesus, in his Passion, will wear a seamless tunic, woven in just one piece.

“In the end this man sent his son to them, saying to himself :”They will show respect to my son." But seeing the son , they said, ’He is the one who will inherit

everything, come on, let’s put him to death! Like that we’ll have his heritage.“And taking hold of him, they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. so when the Master of the vineyard comes, what will he do to these men? They said : He will make these miserable beings perish.”

Understanding that they were being aimed at, the High priests and Pharisees seek to arrest Jesus. They didn’t understand, by identifying themselves to the vinedressers, that they attest that Jesus really is the Son of God.

They received an answer to their questions concerning Jesus’ authority, but their heart is incapable of welcoming it. It was to them and to all of Abraham’s descendants that the Kingdom of God had been commended, but they perverted the heritage:

“This is why I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and will be given to nation that will bear its fruits.”

Israel was not faithful to its mission. Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant will gather around him the twelve apostles, symbol of the “new” Israel, called to give fruits of eternal life and to announce salvation to all peoples on earth.

We recognize in Jesus the one sent by the Master of the vineyard who sends his Son at the moment of the harvest. Jesus encounters the wine growers who had taken hold of the Master’s vine. He will encounter the jealousy of the high priest and the possessiveness of the servants.

But the Son, Jesus, by His death and Resurrection will re establish humanity in God’s Infinite Love, a Love that goes beyond all things.

“Jesus told them”Have you never read in the Scriptures: ’The corner stone that was rejected by the builders became the founding stone? It is the work of the Lord that is admirable in our sight? ’Thus I tell you,: the Kingdom of God will be taken away and be given to a people that will bear its fruits.’ The High Priests and the Pharisees knew very well that he was talking about them. But as they wanted to arrest him they were frightened of the crowds for they considered him as a prophet."

This parable shows us how God will never stop taking care of his people. Still today, we are this people who needs to be taken care of by Jesus. As we work in his vineyard, we listen to Jesus and invoke his mercy so that he establishes us in links of love, links of filiation, fraternity, and spousal love- all that makes up the Kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit gives His gifts like a secret of love and Jesus re establishes us in a filial relationship with our Heavenly Father, and in a fraternal relationship with our brothers and sisters.

We are this new people of God who will bear fruit for the Kingdom. It is the overflowing Love of God that we see when people welcome and share. This the sign of the Church in its unity seen in our families, in our communities, where these links of love are established and lived out.

We ask for the grace to give thanks to God for all the love He fills us with.

Second week of Lent : Friday of 2nd week of Lent

This parable talks to us about the mystery of God’s Love that the People of Israel turn away from : “My beloved had a vine, he planted a rare plant there.” This choice of God is for the people of Israel. God had wished to contemplate in the eyes of his little creature the reflection of his love and all He finds is jealousy, division, dispersion and hatred! Now, jealousy wounds very deeply, it is perfidious. The story of Rachel loved by Isaac, helps us to understand this :“Jacob loved Joseph more than all his other children!” Now, this Love of Jacob for Rachel’s child is contested. But doesn’t Jacob have the right to love as he pleases, to love Rachel’s child with overflowing love? Joseph will be sold by his jealous brothers. Thus the mystery of Jesus is announced, the seamless tunic is a sign of it. Jesus, in his Passion, will wear a seamless tunic, woven in just one piece.

“In the end this man sent his son to them, sating to himself :”They will show respect to my son.“But seeing the son , they said, ’He is the one who will inherit everything, come on, let’s put him to death! Like that we’ll have his heritage.” And taking hold of him, they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. so when the Master of the vineyard comes, what will he do to these men? They said : He will make these miserable beings perish. “Jesus speaks to us about infidelity and compares Israel to the vine and the elected chiefs of the people to wine growers. It was to them and to all of Abraham’s descendants that the Kingdom of God had been commended,, but they perverted the heritage:”This is why I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and will be given to nation that will bear its fruits.“Israel was not faithful to its mission. God create in our hearts the links of love, links of filiation, fraternity, and spousal love, everything that makes up the Kingdom of God. It is the sign of the Church in its unity seen in our families, in our communities, where these links of love are established and lived out. This New Israel it is the Church, all baptized people. We have received, in the person of Jesus and by his message, a unique present that we ought to fructify. It is only right to communicate it and make a gift of it for each person who comes close to us. Living our faith in a warm

family atmosphere of our Christian communities, for “where two or three are gathered in my name, I am in their midst.”

We ask for the grace to give thanks to God for all the love with which He fills us.
