“With the coming of evening, Jesus said :”let us cross over to the other side"

He. 11 , 1-2 8-19 Lk. 1 Mk. 4, 35-41

SATURDAY of 3rd. week, uneven

“And leaving the crowd behind they took him, just as he was, in the boat; and there were other boats with him.” Let us cross over to the other side! We are still in this period of discovering who Jesus is, his disciples are still discovering Jesus’ personality. They have to leave behind them the human way of considering Jesus in order to make an act of faith in Jesus being the the One who will save us. Jesus is just his normal self and the apostles question about things ; they see him tired as any other man, they

spend their daily life with him, considering him as a master, seeing him do many miracles. And now Jesus commands the elements, the sea and the wind. They are asking themselves questions trying to make sense of it all. But without faith, which will be the fruit of the morning of the Resurrection, can we go any further with our questions? From the boat of the Church which floats on the waves of the world, we make our way across to the gateway of Heaven. It is the passage made from the world to the Church that we make first of all. This is done in an unexpected spiritual combat. . Our way of looking at things becomes completely different. We are taken up by a “new love” which moves our whole life. This new love requires of us to make a “passage” whilst remaining entirely confident! It is lived out in faith, thanks to this we can lean on God alone. We follow Jesus’ disciples who were the usual type of fishermen you find on the Lakeland. They had been victim of many storms on the lake! It is another matter now to follow Jesus who opens up for us a path from this world into the Kingdom of God’s Love for us. Jesus teaches us how to pass from this world to the Father, who is on the other bank. It is he who opens up for us the path towards his kingdom of love!

“Then it began to blow a great gale and the waves were breaking into the boat so that it was almost swamped. But he was in the stern, his head on the cushion, asleep. They woke him up and said to them,”Master, do you not care? We are lost!“And he woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea”Quiet now! Be calm! And the wind dropped, and there followed a great calm.“Jesus who is weak and weary, sleeping on the cushion and Jesus who is strong and who calms the tempest are one and the same person, the One Jesus, True God and True Man. Our meditation can lead us to stop at one point or another, but our faith has us bear both aspects in mind, in the Only Son of God, Jesus the Incarnate Word. And it is of this faith that Jesus wants to speak to us in this Gospel in such a way as to give us the true meaning. This faith which is capable to jump from the historical Jesus to Christ the Savior., Jesus opposes something in expected to faith : the disciples are petrified; the only thing they can do is cry out to the Lord Jesus who is sleeping in the boat! In this way their attachment to god is verified, with an immense trust in Providence. So we understand that it is God alone who can overcome our storms, who helps us make this passage! In him we are not only united to Jesus but to each other in a indefectible manner. It is an a great faith in God and in each other that the link of love which unites our heart to God becomes more solid.”Then Jesus said to them :’Why are you frightened? Have you still no faith? They were overcome with awe and said to one another, ’Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him.“Jesus reproaches the way the disciples panicked, they don’t yet have a boundless confidence! This”Do not be afraid“is thread in the gospel and it is good to let it echo within us so as to give us courage. If we had a little courage we would know how to be confident; and if we knew how to trust, we would find the courage to remain beside Jesus in the boat that represents the Church without wakening him. in this violent storm that is now lived out in our hearts we stay firm in faith whatever may happen and cry out to Jesus :” Master, we are lost, don’t you care? We see the question arising : why is Jesus sleeping? and this question takes on a new meaning. We need him; if he sleeps it is because he wants his disciples to have the same faith as he does that he may by following him confront the same trials as he is going to have to make : "men of little faith, why did you doubt? And so the passage to the Church which is a work

of faith in the Infinite Love of God for humanity. From within it is faith that has us understand the person of Jesus, as it is Love that gives someone the ability to understand another person. And this faith is born at the Resurrection which, as it lights up Jesus’ body enlightens also his life and allows us to understand the truth and the relevance of his acts.

We ask for faith for the road ahead which is a long one so that our gaze may always be fixed upon Jesus.
