Ascension of the Lord, year ’C’ 5th May 2016

“Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scripture :and he said to them ’so it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this.”

And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you are clothed with the power from on high."

The Ascension is of utmost importance in the life of Jesus’ relationship with His disciples. This unique moment when the last words of Jesus are exchanged is a time of sadness and at the same time one of promise. It was a call to not turn in on oneself and also a call to aim for the universe; this call was addressed both to Mary and to the Apostles.

The promise of the Coming of the Spirit, as at the Annunciation, gave each one the chance to be able to keep the place Jesus had given them. This is how Jesus gets us to enter into God’s patience in His Tender Loving Mercy.

For forty days after the Passion he appeared to his friends. In an act of faith, we need to accept to go beyond ourselves whenever we shall to be put to the rhythm of God’s love.

’My God, I believe, increase my faith.’

As the Apostles waited, we also are waiting for the Holy Spirit.

’This is the very strength, power, vigour he put to work in Christ when he rose amongst the dead and he had him sit at the right in the Heavens.’

God came amongst us, he took flesh of the Virgin Mary, he became Incarnate. We declare in the Eucharist : He came, he suffered, he died, he is risen.’ It is in the eternal instant of God that his Infinite Love is now manifested to us.

“And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you are clothed with the power from on high.”

The Ascension is the chance given to each one of us to consider all the times in our lives when we were led to leave a promise or when the meaning of our lives seemed to fall into pieces. This departure was an opportunity for us to be given another form of Jesus’ Presence, another way to be in relationship with Him. It is the time to recall, to bless God for all that has been given and to welcome more fully all that is now being offered to us.

As we journey in the Church we live in the night of faith in Jesus who enlightens our journey. Already, when Jesus was lowered down in the Cross, he was raised up! When he took on our human condition He went down into the depths of our experience of hell. Jesus lowered himself down to join us, and Jesus takes with Him in the Kingdom of Love of his Father. In this way he allows our human condition to be freed of sin and of death, and to become the place of thanksgiving. When we say that Christ is ’taken up ’above all things’ this is an ascension of our human condition.

“Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to Heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of Joy; and they were praising God continually in the Temple.”

Our life is from now on in Christ. It is hidden in God’s Heart, and we already live from it on earth.

’Lord, open us up to Joy, open us up to thanksgiving!’

We need an even greater faith before such a gift of God’s Love offered to us.

Divine marriage is brought about in an admirable way in the mystery of the Glorified Jesus. We really are his Body in a new mystery of filiation.

Jesus is the Only beloved Son of the Father. By the fact he is the only Son, we all become children of the Father. When God takes on flesh in the Virgin Mary, he has humanity enter into the love of God Love, Son and Holy Spirit. In faith we remain in the eternal love of Jesus who comes to us, lives, suffers from our suffering, puts death to death and rises from the dead.

Jesus’ Ascension is already our own victory. Jesus came into our flesh, our life is from now on in Him, in Gd. We live in faith, hope and love for we still ned to grow. We intensify our faith, our hope and our love for time is from now on taken on by the eternal instant of God. God’s gifts have us already live the human realities of this earth in the Holy Spirit.

We are with the Risen Lord, taken up into Heaven, we are sent out on mission with Him on our earth, we are the beloved bride of the Lamb.

We ask for the grace to enter even more into the mystery of God’s Infinite Love.
