Tuesday of 22nd Week, uneven numbered year

“Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and he taught them on the Sabbath. And his teaching made a deep impression on them because his word carried authority.”

Teaching was at the heart of Jesus’ Mission in his public life. But Jesus’ way of speaking was much more different than other masters of the Law. This confused people and yet they admired him, Jesus was disconcerting in the way he taught. He ’spoke with authority’. His way of speaking had the authority of ’the Holy One of God.’ This authority in his way of speaking was precisely what gave the strength of language. He would use lively images that were practical; words and image that he took from nature or Holy Scripture.Jesus was a good observer very close to human situations of all kinds. At the same time as we see him teach, we see him do good around him.He reads in the book of life every day experiences which he would use in his teachings. His Word is always something very deep and altogether new. In each on of us there is good will, but we don’t master everything in our life. There are parts of it that escapes us. In a combat for light and truth, Jesus, the Saviour of the world, comes and pulls us out of the darkness.

“Now, in the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and he shouted at the top of his voice.’ Ha! What do you want of us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are : the Holy One of God.”

It is not this man who is crying out, but the demoniac spirit crying out in him! It reacts before Jesus’ presence ’What do you want of us, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us?’ By Jesus’ Presence we are exposed to his Light, to the Tenderness of Jesus, our divine Doctor! If we give him the possibility, Jesus will put the finger on what hurts us, for we carry within ourselves all sorts of wounds,

miseries and quite a good number of burdens! In his Light Jesus has the darkness withdraw. Receiving life at the Cross, we have become children of Light. Our origin is in the Transpierced Heart of Jesus. This is where a source wilI always be flowing, and until he returns. Created ’man and woman in the likeness and resemblance of God’ the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Jesus restores us in our fundamental integrity with God and with others. His word is ’full of authority“and it edifies us so that we may work at building up God’s Kingdom , building us up in our whole being.”But Jesus rebuked it, saying, ’ Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the devil, throwing the man in the middle, went out of him without hurting him at all. Astonishment seized them and they were all saying to one another, ’What is it in his words? He gives orders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.’ And the news of him travelled all through the surrounding countryside."

This possessed man will let himself be built up in Christ, for he finds himself face to face with Jesus in a state of great confusion.Jesus’ Light makes the Liar’s darkness withdraw.Jesus is Life and he rejects all forms of death! Jesus is Love and he rejects all hatred. This man’s edification is about to begin.Jesus makes of us the beloved child of the Father so that our life comes back to the Life of God. Here, in the way Jesus speaks, divine authority and the most human simplicity are reconciled. Authority and simplicity were possible for Jesus thanks to his knowledge of humanity. ’He knows what is in man.’ and his knowledge of the Father and his relationship of loving obedience that he had with him.It is precisely this relationship with our Father which explains his greatness and humility. The authority of his language didn’t adjust to human parameters. There was no competition, no personal interest or haste to show, it was an authority that manifested itself by his sublime words or actions as well as his humility and simplicity.

Let us ask for the grace to co operate with Jesus at the work of the liberation of humanity.
