2 Sm.7,1-11 Ps.88 Mk.4,1-20

Wednesday of 3rd Week, even numbered year

“Jesus began to teach them by the lakeside, but such a huge crowd gathered round him that he got into a boat on the water and sat there. He taught them many things in parables, and in the course of his teaching he said to them, ’Listen! Imagine a sower going out to sow. Now it happened that, as he sowed, some of the seed fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate it up.”

A parable is a comparison serving to facilitate the comprehension of a teaching, an image destined to illustrate a truth applied to the Kingdom of God. Jesus is Master of the parable, to illustrate his teaching he has recourse to images of everyday life, thus making his Word accessible to the most modest listeners.

When we contemplate the sower sowing the good seed everywhere, we come to the understanding that God goes right to the end of everything! There is not one single rock or ravine which cannot become a marvellous garden. There fore God acts where it is most difficulty in our being, in the hardest places. If I consent to God’s Word, then it does its work!

In this marvellous parable, we come to recognise that it concerns each of our lives. Jesus addresses the liberty of each person, his action depends upon the response that we give to Him, on our consent, so that this seed of life bears all its fruit. It is according to our welcome of the Word of God , of our faith in Our Saviour Jesus, that the mystery of the Infinite Love of God invades all of our being.

“Some seed fell on rocky ground where it found little soil and at once sprang up, because there was no depth of earth ; and when the sun came up it was scorched and, not having any roots, it withered away. Some seed fell into thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it produced no crop. And some fell into thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it produced no crop. And some seeds fell into rich soil, grew tall and strong, and produced a good crop ; the yield was thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold. And he said, ’Anyone who has ears for listening should listen!’”

This is what the Kingdom of God is : Infinite Love sown in our hearts. In order to understand it, we need a Revelation from the Lord, and Lights from the Holy Spirit : ’ To all those who received Him, he gave power to become a child of God."

The same seed falls to the earth where it can germinate and fructify. People not only hear the Gospel but ’receive it with joy’ ; not only do they receive it with joy, but they bear fruit : ’Thirty, sixty or one hundred.’

To varying degrees, depending on the case, the Word of God always bears fruit.

Mary, the ’first one on the way’, received this Word. She who bore the good seed, she caused it to fructify; Mary gave the Son of God to us. It is a matter of receiving him as she did, and to believe in Him. When we became his children, God transforms us from within, thus the Holy Spirit, like a marvellous interior Master, orientates all things to the Father. The former world has come to pass, a new world is already here.

“When he was alone, the Twelve, together with the others who formed his company, asked what the parables meant. He told them, ’To you is granted the secret of the kingdom of God, but to those who are outside everything comes in parables. He said to them ’What the sower is sowing is the Word. Those on the edge of the path where the word is sown are people who have no sooner heard it that Satan at once comes and carries away the Word that was sown in them. Similarly, those who are sown on patches of rock are people who, when they first hear the word, welcome it at once with joy. But they have no root deep down and do not last, should some trial come, or some persecutions on account of the world, at once they fall away. then there are others who are sown in thorns. They have heard the word, but the worries of the world, the lure of riches, and all the other passions come in to choke the word, and so it produces nothing. And there are those who have been sown in rich soil ; they hear the word and accept it and yield a harvest, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”

Jesus is ’the Word of God become flesh. ’Jesus comments the Word of God which He gives to us, speaking to us of just how important it is! The seed is the Word of God which wants to take possession of the whole of our humanity. And there isn’t any rock too hard which doesn’t let a seed of wheat grow in it. This seed transforms the rock into an absolutely lovely garden. There are not

any worries that don’t melt like snow under the Loving gaze of God, our Heavenly Father. To enter into this perspective, is to believe that Jesus is a Saviour for me. To believe this, and to have the Divine Doctor act, well, He heals me by this very act of my believing.

’I believe, Lord, come and help my faith that is so little!’’

We give thanks to God because our hearts and our lives already bear fruit, thirty, sixty and a hundredfold.

Now that Jesus is in Heaven, He does this through those whom He sends forth, through all those who are given the responsibility of the ministry of preaching.

We ask for the grace to truly consent to the Word of God.
